Passivation Tanks

Houston Plating’s oversized nitric acid tanks – 143” long x 72” wide x 66” deep – provide passivation services for those larger stainless parts that are typically beyond the capabilities of most service providers.

Stainless steel undergoes a chemical reaction that forms a discolored, corrosive layer on its surface.

The acid bath used in passivation strips away the layer of corrosion, forming a non-dimensional protective layer.

All metals and metal alloy surfaces react chemically to their environment. Stainless steel reacts by developing a scale on the surface that, left in place, can affect the integrity and performance of the part. In addition, when in contact with iron for a prolonged period of time, stainless steel parts can be susceptible to cathodic corrosion, which can damage the part.

Passivation is an acid-based process that protects stainless steel by reducing the metal’s chemical reactivity. Using nitric acid to treat and coat the metal, the free iron on the surface is removed and a passive, protective layer forms.
